MiCA
Markets in Crypto-Assets Regulation
Definition
The EU regulation establishing a comprehensive regulatory framework for crypto-assets that are not covered by existing financial services legislation. MiCA introduces requirements for issuers of asset-referenced tokens and e-money tokens, as well as authorisation and conduct requirements for crypto-asset service providers (CASPs).
Regulatory Context
MiCA is the first major jurisdiction-wide crypto regulatory framework, phased in during 2024-2025. It aims to provide legal certainty for the crypto industry while protecting consumers and ensuring market integrity. Many other jurisdictions are developing similar frameworks.
